Help Paying Utilities

Wisconsin weatherization programs helps families save on utilities

Free weatherization services are offered to eligible households in Wisconsin. The state Division of Energy Services works with community action agencies, WHEAP, and non-profit agencies across Wisconsin in order to offer free energy conservation programs to low income families, senior citizens and the disabled.

The federal government weatherization program has proven to be very effective in helping people save money on their utility bills. In general, a household can save up to $600 per year on their annual utility/heating costs. Studies show that weatherization has reduced the annual energy usage and utility bill of these homes by an average of 30 percent and as much as 50 percent in some cases.

To learn more, or apply, call a local agency which can include local governments, community action agencies, housing authorities, and other non-profit organizations in your town.

The agency that administers weatherization for your area in Wisconsin will receive a list of eligible applicants from the state agency known as WHEAP. They will work together to determine service priority and the eligibility for your home.

Most of the resources offered are targeted households and residents who have an excessive energy burden, and this will include low income handicapped, elderly and families with children.

The Wisconsin Division of Energy contracts with these local non-profit community action agencies to provide conservation services. They will help people reduce their home utility bills, save energy, and also make their home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

As indicated above, the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) helps administers the federal government funded program. Once it is decided what you qualify for, and what will be most beneficial to your home, agency crews and subcontractors will make the updates to your home. All improvements will help you conserve power, and can include heating and cooling system tune ups, CFL bulbs, sealing air leaks into the home, insulation, and more. Other services can include counseling for energy conservation and energy budgets, outreach services, pro-active co payment plans, and even furnace repair.
