Help Paying Utilities

Ohio Winter Reconnect Program

The state of Ohio wants to ensure that people can keep their utility service during the cold winter months. To help meet that goal, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) offers state residents a service that can help them prevent a disconnection. It also provides them with a one-time winter heating season reconnect service for customers across the state who have had their utility, electric or natural gas disconnected due to nonpayment of their monthly utility bill.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has ordered natural gas and electric utilities to either reconnect or maintain utility service to those customers who have been disconnected. The program even applies to those customers who have only been threatened with disconnection of their utility service due to nonpayment of their utility bill.

The Ohio winter reconnect program provides struggling individuals, families, the elderly, and other across Ohio  with an opportunity to have their utility and home heating service reconnected or maintained during difficult times or if they are facing a hardship.

How does the reconnect program work?

If you need to use the program, in order to have your utility service restored, the Ohio winter reconnect program requires that customers across the state pay the amount owed or $175 towards their utility bill, whichever is less, plus a service reconnection fee of no more than $36. Last year over 300,000 customers across the state took advantage of the program.

To provide more details, in order to use the PUCO heating reconnect service, customers must have had their Ohio PUCO regulated electric and natural gas utilities disconnected due to nonpayment. Or they may have been threatened with a termination of heir service.

These customers can have their utility service reconnected for the amount owed on their utility bill or $175, whichever is less, plus a service reconnection fee of no more than $36. This is a one-time service only, so use it wisely. In addition, there is a limited timeframe in which it can be used. Customers may only use the plan one time between Oct. 18, 2010 and April 15, 2011. There is no income eligibility requirement in order to receive help, so all customers can use it.
