Help Paying Utilities

Ohio weatherization program

Low income families can explore the Ohio Home Weatherization Assistance Program. It is paid for by the federal government, but administered by the Office of Community Assistance as well as the Ohio Department of Development's Community Service Division. Weatherization, also known as HWAP, can help people save hundreds of dollars per year on their utility bills, increase energy efficiency, and improve a homeowner’s health and safety.

HWAP is offered for free to qualified families, which will usually include those with a total household income at or below 200 percent of the federal government poverty guidelines. Others that qualify for weatherization include Ohio residents who receive Supplemental Security Income, PIPP (Percentage of Income Payment Plan) participants, or PIPP eligible households.

Ohio weatherization savings

Clients of the program can receive on average ~25% savings on natural gas and utility bills. Heating consumption can be lowered by over 20 percent, and homes that heat with electricity will reduce usage on average of 15 percent. It works by reducing energy use by reducing air infiltration, adding insulation and addressing heat loss in homes.

Also, an energy audit will be provided from a highly trained and certified inspector. Additional services that an Ohio homeowner may receive include weather stripping, attic, sidewall and basement insulation, water heaters and heating systems repairs or replacements, and safety inspections. Education and advice is provided to.
