Help Paying Utilities

North Carolina weatherization.

Low income residents of North Carolina can lower their utility bills and save money from the weatherization program. While it is paid for by the federal government, weatherization in N.C. is administered through the North Carolina Energy Office, and they work closely with non-profit community action agencies across the state.

Weatherization can help homeowners improve the energy efficiency of their home, educate the public, improve safety of their household, save people hundreds of dollars per year on their utility, cooling, and heating bills. Priority is given to disabled, people who live on a fixed income like the elderly, and low income families. Many North Carolina families are able to stay warm in the winter and cool during the summer from weatherization.

The service is wide ranging, and a number of types of homes can apply. For example, weatherization assistance is available for mobile homes, single-family homes, apartments, and condominiums. You do not need to own your own home to be eligible for help. If you rent, your landlord does need to agree to the improvements being made. Improvements made to homes can include:

A consultation and audit of the home will occur, and the contractors can help determine the types of improvements which will be most beneficial.

  • Installing a smart thermostat can be provided.
  • Professional contractors will evaluate your residence for conservation opportunities.
  • Replacement of non-energy efficient refrigerators or appliances with energy efficient models.
  • The program can pay for the tuning, repair or replacement of your heating and air systems as needed.
  • Receive minor repairs to homes for health and safety reasons.
  • The program can help pay for the insulation of floors, attics, and walls as needed.
  • Replacing existing lighting with energy efficient bulbs.

The program is offered at no cost to qualified homeowners. Over the years thousands of North Carolina homeowners have benefited from energy conservation measures. While there are income limits in place, people of all ages may qualify for help.
