Help Paying Utilities

Missouri weatherization program

The Missouri Division of Energy administers the weatherization program at the state level. The agency works with local community action agencies to ensure that residents who are qualified and who are most at risk benefit from this federal government program which can help people save money on, and therefore pay, their monthly utility bills.

Weatherization provides free energy-efficient and conservation improvements to qualified low income households in Missouri. The primary beneficiaries are lower income senior citizens, the elderly, those with physical disadvantages, children and others who pay a large percentage of their income towards their utility and energy bills.

Studies show that lower income households can pay about 15 percent of their total household income towards utility and heating bills. More moderate income families may pay about 5% of their income towards these same bills. So weatherization can help those who are low income reduce their monthly payments. Studies also show that low income families often need to cut back on other basic needs in order to free up money to pay their energy bills, so people can literally put themselves at risk as they put off buying food or medications. Other low income people in Missouri may live in older homes that may have older, less efficient appliances or not have insulation. So weatherization can help all of these families.

Missouri households that have signed up for and have received weatherization services are better able to pay their utility and heating bills, reduce debts, and improve their overall situation. A residence can have their bills reduced by about 35%. To apply for help and weatherization, call a Missouri community action agency below.

At first, the community action agency will conduct an energy audit of the client’s home to determine what improvements will produce the greatest energy savings to the homeowner. They will install enhancements to your home such as extra insulation or CFL bulbs. Since the late 1970s, almost 200,000 Missouri homes have been weatherized through the LIWAP program. The average homeowner can save almost $500 per year on their bills.
