Help Paying Utilities

Weatherization program in Louisiana helps save money on utilities

Weatherization is offered in Louisiana from community action agencies. The goal is to help low income families make updates and repairs to their home, with the objective of decreasing their utility bills. So the improvements will help families reduce the amount of energy they need to cool or heat their homes. Most of the resources go to helping lower the heating or cooling bills for elderly and disabled individuals in Louisiana. The Community Development Weatherization Project is the formal name of the a federal government energy conservation program known as weatherization, and is paid for by the U.S. Department of Energy.

There are a number of requirements that need to be met by applicants. Low income and working poor residents of Louisiana that meet these weatherization program requirements are eligible for weatherization services. The applicant's home or apartment must also meet certain requirements specified by the community action agency and the state. The home must be able to be properly weatherized within the funds provided by the government.

All of the repairs that the crew from your local community action agency will make on your house will be energy conservation improvements or repairs. Some health/safety issues can be addressed too. Therefore the weatherization program will help cold air from seeping out during the summer months and/or also keep cold air from seeping into your house during the winter. After a household is determined to be eligible for the program, a certified Louisiana Weatherization Specialist completes an inspection and audit of the home for health, energy, and safety concerns. All authorized weatherization work will be done by local licensed and insured contractors at no cost to the occupants.

Some of the repairs that can be made include sealing, caulking cracks around windows and doors; installing weather-stripping around doors to seal them; Attic insulation; Replacing broken window panes; Repairing holes in floors; or Installation of hot water heater blankets.

As indicated above, weatherization repairs and updates are based on need, and with priority given to low income families with children, households with elderly members and handicapped. Households with exceptionally high utility bills may also receive priority service. Tenants with landlord approval as well as homeowners are eligible. All government aid is only for those Louisiana residents who cannot afford the cost of making the weatherized repairs on their own, and updates are permanent and will reduce a clients utility bills indefinitely.
