Help Paying Utilities

Programs offered by SoCal Gas.

Some of the resources and services offered by Southern California Gas that can help people pay their utility bills include the following.

The Gas Assistance Fund - This assistance program provides a one-time, free cash grant to customers during the winter. The applicant needs to be income-qualified and also unable to pay their current utility or gas bill. The program, which is available until funds are depleted (so apply early), is being administered by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and is funded by donations from customers and employees of The Gas Company, as well as shareholders of Sempra Energy, which is The Gas Company’s parent company.

The Direct Assistance Program (DAP) - This option provides energy-saving home improvements to low and moderate income-qualified homeowners and renters, which will therefore help reduce future utility bills. Some of the free services that are offered include: ceiling insulation to keep the home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter; door weather-stripping and caulking to keep out drafts; furnace replacement (owner-occupied homes only); low-flow shower heads that can save energy used to heat water; and other minor home repairs, all of which are free to the homeowner or renter.

The California Alternate Rate for Energy (CARE) program - This is a resource that provides a 20-percent rate discount to the customer on their monthly natural gas bill. Customers may be eligible automatically for this help if they currently receive benefits from the Women, Infants and Children, Healthy Families, Medi-Cal/Medicaid, LIHEAP programs, Food Stamps, the government Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In addition, SoCal Gas will help people save money on their bills. They do this from free energy conservation tips and advice. Learn more.

Medical Baseline Allowance program - This is an offering for individuals who may require additional low cost or free heating for health reasons. People may qualify for additional natural gas service at the lowest rate through this program. One of the pros of this options is that there are no income requirements for the Medical Baseline program; however, doctor certification is required in order to receive help.
