Alabama Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fund In the mid 1990s, Senate Bill number 45 was passed in the legislature. This law provides for a state wide low-income weatherization program that will supplement federal government funds by including a voluntary tax checkoff option for Alabama state income-tax filers. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will help administer the moneys, which will help provide weatherization assistance and programs to eligible recipients.
Alabama Power Co. Utility customers who are verified as Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will not be billed or responsible for paying a monthly service charge of approximately $8.91. 1-800-245-2244
Alagasco Customers of this utility who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) also will not be billed a monthly customer charge of about $8. To apply for this help program, customers must bring their Medicaid card to their local Alagasco office.
Mobile Gas Customers who receive Supplemental Security Income in the form of SSI payments or Aid to Dependent Children and who qualify for this aid, will receive help in paying utility bills and they can have the customer charge of approximately $8 waived from their monthly gas bill. Apply at any of the Mobile Gas offices to receive the waiver.
