Help Paying Utilities

Heatshare helps pay Columbia Gas Maryland utility bills

One of the main Columbia Gas resources for paying utility bills is HeatShare. This program relies on donations from people in the community. As funding allows, grants for your utility bills can be used to restore your electric service or to pay off outstanding arrearage on your account.

The program relies on help from people and businesses in the Maryland community. If you need to know how you can assist, here is what can be done. Customers of Columbia Gas can donate to and thereby help support the HeatShare fund with personal contributions. Your donations will in fact be tax deductible and can really make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate and people facing a crisis. The emergency fund was designed for low-income and struggling customers who have exhausted all other available energy-assistance resources, including government aid.

Not only will your donation make a difference, but Columbia Gas also contributes to the program as well. They will match 50 cents for every $1 that someone or that a business contributes. Together, these donations from people and organizations in the community will help them less fortunate. All of the money is used to fund the grant program that was designed to help customers manage their electric bill costs. While many customers contribute $5 or $10 each month, you can give as little or as much as you like. Every dollar helps and is tax deductible.

A few steps can be taken in order to become a donor. You can dial Columbia Gas. Or just indicate your contribution level on the back of the payment coupon that you receive on your monthly utility bill. Donations can be made one time or on a recurring basis. To make a one-time donation to HeatShare, just enclose a separate check along with your bill payment. Any monthly contributions you make will simply be added to your bill.

To apply, keep in mind that the fund was created to serve as a last resort. It was created with low-income customers in mind. They need to have applied for and also exhausted all other available utility bill assistance resources. For more information on donating or to apply, call Columbia Gas Universal Services department at 1-800-537-7431.

Several income limits are in place as well. The utility company will review your total household income, based on the number of family members, and will then determine whether you qualify. Be prepared to fully document your hardship and have proof of all income and other information.
