Help Paying Utilities

California energy bill assistance

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has partnered with numerous utility companies to create “We CARE California.” program as a way to raise awareness about energy bill assistance programs that lower income customers save money on their energy bills.

Throughout California, there are more than 900,000 families throughout the state who may be eligible for energy bill programs that can reduce their energy bills by at least 20 percent, and usually even more. One such assistance program is known as the the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) program, which will help customers with receiving a 20 percent discount on their utility bill. Other programs available that can help with paying utility bills include the Energy Management Assistance and Direct Assistance Programs, both of which can assist income-qualified households with conserving energy and reducing their heating and electrical bills. SCE and SoCalGas also both supply and install energy-efficient appliances and other energy saving equipment at no cost to eligible customers. Both of these assistance programs are available to both renters and homeowners.

SoCalGas and SCE both state that as in most endeavors to provide information and assistance, education and awareness of the aid available is paramount to the success. The companies strongly encourage all of our customers, and especially those who lost their jobs, to find out if they qualify for discounts on their energy bills.

As part of the We Care California program, representatives from community-based aid organizations, water and telephone companies, and also other financial assistance and counseling services will be available to share their information and resources.
