Help Paying Utilities

Weatherization in Alabama can help save money on utilities

Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, or ADECA for short, runs the weatherization program. The United States Department of Energy pays for the weatherization program in Alabama. The program has the ability to save people up to an average of $350 per year on their utility bills.

Low income households and qualified seniors and the disabled can save money on their utility bills from this program. While it is paid for by federal government funds, weatherization is run by Community Action Agencies across Alabama. Every year thousands of local families benefit from energy saving measures, and best of all is that it is free to qualified individuals.

The resource works by improving the energy conservation and efficiency of individual’s homes. That is the main goal. A secondary benefit is that it will also ensure the health and safety of homeowners. In order to receive utility bill savings, the applicant's income must not exceed 200% of the federal government poverty level.

Alabama weatherization assistance typically includes a number of services for qualified homeowners and families. Just a sampling of the improvements which can occur include installing additional wall, attic, and floor insulation, sealing duct work, repairing leaky and/or faulty windows and doors, performing HVAC system tune-ups and repairs, and replacing incandescent light bulbs with low cost, energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs. A number of free health and safety checks are also performed on the home on clients.

A contractor/inspector who is part of the community action agency will visit an applicant’s home to see what work needs to be done to help the person reduce their utility usage and save money. After that visit and inspection is complete, workers from the weatherization program will proceed to make energy-saving improvements as needed to the home.
