Aid with paying energy bills in Florida

Florida families and Residents in Newberry are receiving extra utility bill aid. They may now have the option of paying their energy bills by only 50 percent at a time.

The city is providing the aid. An amendment to a Newberry city ordinance, which was recently passed at the City Commission meeting, put in place an aid program that states when the City of Newberry deems it appropriate, it will accept a partial payment of 50 percent of the energy bill by the 15th of each month.

But the balance of the energy bill still needs to be paid. The remaining balance on the bill is due by 4:30 p.m. on the third day of the following month. If the energy bill is left unpaid, the utility company will be subject to service disconnection the next day.

The Newberry Florida city clerk said that he hopes it will aid the citizens that really need the energy bill assistance.

In order to qualify for partial payment energy bill plan, a county citizen must fill out an application with financial information regarding his or her personal financial situation. A committee that has been set up by the city will then review the application and decide on eligibility for aid.

If you have the ability to pay your energy bill all at once on the 15th of the month, we would still like you to pay that. This program is not for everyone said Newberry Mayor John Glanzer.

This also helps with late fees. The ordinance also suspended the $10 service charge that is due from delinquent energy bills for this month.
